The Bukit Panjang Light Rapid Transit (BPLRT) was launched as the first light rail line in Singapore in 1999.The fully automated 8km line connects residential estates within Bukit Panjang and Choa Chu Kang to the North-South and Downtown Lines. Currently, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is working on the renewal of the BPLRT line. The renewal of Bukit Panjang LRT (BPLRT) is on track for completion by 2024. Meanwhile, SMRT Corporation, a leading multi-modal transport operator, has intensified maintenance of the BPLRT, resulting in BPLRT’s higher reliability.

LTA has launched smart trains for the Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit (LRT). These trains have ‘smart misting glass windows’ that automatically turn misty when the public transport vehicle comes close to a residential building. These trains use rubber tyres instead of the metal wheels found on Medium Rail Transit trains, making them quieter while in operation.

Singaporeans love how futuristic these trains are as it safeguards individuals’ privacy in residential areas. The new BPLRT trains also boast an enhanced air-con system, giving customers a break from Singapore’s warm and humid weather. On top of all these benefits, the BPLRT will also be more eco-friendly since they utilise energy-efficient LED lights.

Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit Renewal

Transport services in Bukit Panjang will be enhanced with the renewal of the Bukit Panjang light rail transit (LRT). While new trains and a signalling system project for SGD 344 million are expected to be rolled out in 2022, other works such as the replacement of the power rail and decommissioning of the old signalling system’s track circuits are slated to be completed by 2024.

1. Speedier journeys

The new signalling system will allow trains to run more closely to each other, reducing intervals and creating shorter waiting times. Better speed will offer smoother, safer, and more reliable rides.

2. Better condition monitoring to pre-empt faults

Smart sensors and intelligent real-time condition monitoring will enable faults to be detected early.

3. New power rails system

More robust power rail brackets will enhance system availability. Real-time monitoring of rail alignment will allow for predictive maintenance.

4. New and improved Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) for cool comfortable rides

19 new LRVs will make rides more comfortable and better for the environment. They will be fitted with smart climate control systems and energy-efficient lights. The vehicles will also be equipped with an efficient Alternating Current (AC) propulsion motor for easier maintenance.

Commenting on the renewal works, SMRT Chairman, Seah Moon Ming, said: “Our Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit (BPLRT) has exceeded its MKBF target of 100,000 train km while undergoing network renewal.” SMRT Chairman further added: “We are also working closely with LTA and system suppliers to prepare for a smooth opening of Stage 3 of the new Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL). Our Buses team has likewise performed well, maintaining high service and reliability standards."

SMRT CEO, Ngien Hoon Ping, said: “We pursue collective and continuous excellence. This is the heart of our Kaizen philosophy.”

Conclusion

A better travel experience awaits once the 20-year-old Bukit Panjang LRT (BPLRT) has completed its makeover. Renewal works to enhance reliability began in 2018 and are expected to be completed by 2024.
