Recent Developments

April 2022:

ICAR's Central Institute of Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET) located in Ludhiana, India, developed a mechanized system for seed grading, drying, threshing, cleaning, roasting, and popping gorgon nut. Gorgon nut is an aquatic plant seed grown in Bihar. The mechanized system allows for the efficient processing of the seeds and reduces the processing time significantly. It costs up to 15 lakh for a smaller unit to produce 12 kg of puffed gorgon nut per hour from processed seeds. The processing time was reduced from 2-3 days to 20 hours, leading to increased productivity and efficiency for gorgon nut farmers and processors.

March 2022:

The state of Tamil Nadu in India plans to establish village-level marketing centers to benefit small and marginal farmers. These marketing centers aim to promote local value addition and enable farmers to earn additional revenue through their participation. The program is supported by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), which provides assistance to the state government in implementing these initiatives. The village-level marketing centers are expected to empower farmers by enhancing market access and facilitating value addition to their agricultural produce.
